Chives are a fantastically versatile ingredient. They have a subtle onion flavour that is often used as a herb to enhance many dishes. They are easy to grow and easy to preserve. Chives are a thin, leafy vegetable from the allium family which includes onions and leeks. Chives also produce pretty flowers that are edible. Here’s our guide on how to freeze chives.

In order to preserve fresh chives we recommend freezing them. It is a very simple process.

Chive Freezing Method

As with many herbs it is often better to chop them up rather then freeze them whole. The chopping process has the added impact of helping release flavour.

Some methods use a flash freeze process where you spread the chives out onto a sheet and freeze them but actually chives remain pretty separated if you put them into a plastic container and just bung them in the freezer.

Frozen chives last for ages, at least a year. Just dip into your pot and select the quantity you need. They will thaw naturally very quickly and you can add them to the dish you are making, just as you would use fresh chives.
